FOUR DATA COLLECTIONS FROM FOUR STATIONS
STATION 4
The front corner of Keiki fishpond. It is sunny and near the fresh water spring entrance.
NITRITE & NITRATE
The chemical nitrite is a waste product in biological filtration process. While natural is actually very harmful to fish, as fish stress out they can develop ulcers and fin-rot. To prevent this bacteria convert nitrite to nitrate which is relatively non-toxic. Being aware of the nitrite levels will allow better further restoration for Keiki fishpond. Especially if any animals, plants, or alterations are made to the pond the effects can be tested.
PHOSPHATE
Important element for life as it is beneficial for cell membranes, energy source, and more bio-chemical processes. Created from mineralization of dead matter like plants, bacteria, and feces.
STATION 1
SPRING WATER
In front portion of the Keiki Fishpond. Where Fresh water flows into the pond from a spring in the mountains.
STATION 2
SMALL MAKAHA
In the further front portion of the Keiki fishpond. This is where the ocean salt water flows into the pond.
STATION 3
SHADED PORTION
The back corner of the Keiki fishpond. Where there is little sunlight hitting the water.
DATA INFO
Collected data for nitrite, nitrate, phosphate in four locations
Different locations would show variety of data
Different levels on chemicals would show Keiki fishpond health
Understanding these chemicals and their affect on the fish can make keiki pond's future more sustainable
Taking frequent data will allow us to know the health of fish within the pond
